Mini villages and furniture
I was born in South Africa and lived there for 46years. I’m a qualified educator and got my degree in Early Childhood Development: Foundation Phase. My favourite part of the day was doing art with my learners. My only rule being, “There are no mistakes in art, only new avenues”. I’ve always had a love for creating, but never the time. My family and I moved to Portugal in January 2019. I now have the opportunity, and time, to take up my passion for creating. I find daily inspiration in our new surroundings. Some may say I’m a bit all over the place, and I suppose this is what keeps me inspired. It’s not in my character to sit still, and I find I’m most relaxed when I’m creating. I paint with acrylics on canvas, create mini village houses from recycable materials and upcycle furniture.
I’m in awe at my new surroundings and find such enjoyment and fulfillment in the pieces that make it unique. There’s something that makes me feel at home in the washing that blows dry in the wind, how time seems to have stood still in the architecture, yet we move forward everyday. I get to work in detail when creating my mini houses/villages, and try incorporate everything that is unique to the surroundings. The houses are made from recycable materials. I love that I’m able to use things that have been discarded. I try incorporate details that are inherent in the Portuguese houses and neighbourhoods. When I look at a finished mini house I want to feel the same emotion I do when taking a walk down one of the cobbled streets.
I believe that everything deserves a second chance, hence my love for furniture upcycling. I love the shape, sturdiness and style of older furniture. With upcycling I’m taking something old and giving it a new look, which allows an old piece be incorporated into a modern setting. The furniture pieces have become an alternate canvas in which I can express myself. Thereby my furniture and mini houses being “100% Rel❤️vd”
