Collection: Penny Coombs

I live in Alferce high in the Serra de Monchique in the southwest of Portugal, where I have my studio.

My paintings are all about being in the natural world around me and tend towards the abstract. I work mostly with acrylic paints but also use oils, crayons and pastels. Landscape, trees and flowers, beautiful skies and views, the sculptural forms of the mountains and coastline and the sound of the wind in the trees, the many colours and varieties of flowers, plants and trees are my inspiration.

I love sketching as a means of feeling my way into a landscape whether it be inland or on the coast. I usually begin by walking through the landscape and observing, becoming absorbed in all the sensory delights a place offers, the light and colour, the smells and sounds. I will then sit a while before sketching, often taking some photographs to record how the light changes at different times of day and with the seasons.

I then become absorbed in mixing different palettes, aspiring to recall the beauty, colour and feeling of a place.

Being outdoors is a passion for me and I hope to bring some of the peace, beauty, and presence of a place to the observer of my paintings.

My paintings, prints and cards can be seen at various exhibitions around the Algarve, most recently at the Quinta da Tor near Loulé. I also enjoy taking on commissions for a painting of your choice. Please contact me for details or to visit my studio.
