Medium: Acrylics, sometimes Gouache
“I’m a British artist living in the Algarve. I’ve been painting on and off since childhood and decided to devote more time to ‘being creative’ after obtaining a degree in philosophy some years ago. I have a keen interest in history and architecture and I hope this shows in my work. My curious interest in the Knights Templar sees me returning to this theme again and again. The history of the Templars in Portugal, their transition into the Order of Christ, and the links to Prince Henry the Navigator and the Age of Discovery makes for fascinating study.
I work predominantly in acrylic, sometimes gouache, and alternate between brush work and palette knives. I mainly paint historical/medieval themed paintings, most notably Knights Templar, as part of my Crusades Series, but I have been known to knock out the odd viking. I’m drawn to strong images, whether symbolic or representational, and I prefer my paintings to have a narrative. It’s the mood, the ambience, the energy that I really love, so I try to imbue the finished piece with an innate life and sense of atmosphere.”
